When Socks Mean Security

JuliaWhen we met Julia, she was in a situation that put her at a high risk for experiencing abuse in many forms. We immediately welcomed her into our care and ensured her safety.

Because of Julia's situation, she came to us with nothing, so our staff took her to the supply closet to pick out pajamas, underwear and socks. Julia was shocked and excited that someone would offer her these items and not expect anything in return.

Before going to bed that night, Julia asked CEDARS staff multiple times when she would need to return the clothing. We told her each time she asked that they were hers to keep.

When friends like you make plans to give a gift through a will, fund a gift annuity or make plans for any other type of gift, we feel a bit like Julia. Happily surprised, then pleased, then warm and secure, appreciated and grateful—part of a caring family.

The next day, Julia confided in a CEDARS staff member that she had originally planned to run away as soon as she got to CEDARS. She had previously run away from other agencies that had offered help because she had a hard time trusting adults due to her past experiences.

The staff member asked her why she had decided to stay. Julia answered that the socks had changed her mind. She feels safe at CEDARS and believes the people here really care about her. Julia has become part of the CEDARS family. Thank you for making her part of yours through your support.
